The arts have played an important role in Oak Ridge culture since its founding. The Little Theatre of Oak Ridge was built in 1943 and continues today as the Oak Ridge Playhouse. The Oak Ridge Symphony Orchestra was former in 1944 and still performs to this day. The Oak Ridge Civic Ballet holds the longest existing dance charter in the state of Tennessee, having been formed in 1963. And museums abound in Oak Ridge, many of which center around Oak Ridge's status as the Atromic City: the American Science and Energy Museum, the Oak Ridge History Museum, welcome and visitor centers at Y-12 and K-25, and a Children's Museum. There is also an ampitheater in AK Bisell Park.
